Focus on what you want means to have a purpose and work towards your goals or outcome.
If you focus on what you do not want then you will get more of it.

How do you maintain your focus?
Look at what's important for you and find a big reason why you want it.
Give your options a rating of 1-10 with 10 very important.
Go with an 8 or higher as important.
If things go wrong or do not come out how you wanted , revise your goals accept the feedback as a lesson and move on.
Look at your goals daily and remember why you are doing it. For what purpose is a great question to ask your self.
The past is done finished and the future has not even happened yet.
Being present is where you can do and achieve the most or best results in your life.
